User : My daughter has just found out that she is 6 weeks pregnant and her urine test came back as GPS Postitive, it is the weekend here and we are concerened about the risks and problems associated with GPS, at such a early stage for her..
Doctor : Hi
User : Hello
Doctor : please give me a couple of mins to read your query.
Doctor : may i ask a few relevant questions here?
User : yes
Doctor : what is her age?
User : 23
Doctor : ok , is this her first pregnancy?
User : yes
Doctor : ok , let me explain it to you
User : thankyou
Doctor : having group b streptococcus positive , may be a normal thing
Doctor : these are the bacteria which are generally found in the vaginal mucosa and the rectum
Doctor : harbouring them could simply mean that she is a carrier of the same
Doctor : this GROUP B streptococci colonisation does not mean she has an STD
Doctor : not every baby born to amother with GBS positive will become ill
Doctor : may i know if your daughter has fever?
User : no she doesn
Doctor : does she have any symptoms of burning while urination , vomiting or abdominal pain?
User : though you did mention about STD, sometime last year she was postive for genital Herpes Zoster2, could this be the reason for that, she hasn't had a breakout for a long time. not that I know of tho she has had a bit of vomiting and abdominal pain in the first few weeks, she explained it to me like a period pain, her Dr did she that it could have bee inplantation pains, she has had a ultrasound and everything apparently looked ok on the results, tho she thought she was a little further along than the dates on the US.
Doctor : ok , no herpes has nothing to do with group B strepto positive
Doctor : let me summarize it to you
User : thanks
Doctor : we generally categorize pregnant mothers into high risk and low risk categories if tested GBS positive
Doctor : onl about one in 200 babies can get ill if mother is GBS positive
Doctor : if she has no fever, burning urination , vomiting , unable to eat well , dehydrated, sore throat, abdominal pain and all other symptoms of being very ill , then she is a high risk
Doctor : other wise she is considered low risk
Doctor : since she has already been screened at 6 weeks
Doctor : i feel there is no need to re screen her
Doctor : she may need a course of antibiotics when she goes for her check up or if the doctor feels it is fine , then no medicines will be needed
Doctor : it is only during her 35 weeks on wards, that she will be needing an extra care and a course of antibiotics during labour , to make sure her child is prevented from any chances of getting an infection
Doctor : i hop you could follow my points.
Doctor : hope*
User : ok, her and her husband just got back from their honeymoon from FiJi and she said she was vomiting while there, though she only found out the day after the wedding, so thought it could be some morning sickness and the pains she was having I don't think are as there as much as they were, but from as far as I know she has none of the other symptoms you mentioned, so I am guessing that she would be a low risk hopefully, I would say her Dr. will call her back in for the results of her blood tests anyway, I was just concerned for her after reading on the internet. thankyou for your help..
Doctor : are you with me?
Doctor : yes , do not worry , as I feel the vomiting she had is the one associated with pregnancy and the pain which may be due to implantation
Doctor : most often this could just be the normal flora in her vagina , seen in 20 percent of women , which may need nothing but soem care in her later weeks of pregnancy
Doctor : some*
Doctor : kindly follow up with her doctor as you have planned and i feel things will be good
User : thank you again for your help..Kind Regards
Doctor : pleasure here
Doctor : wishing her a safe confinement and good health
Doctor : thanks for consulting me
Doctor : take care
User : your welcome, take care as well
