User :   I have severe lower abdominal/pelvic pain along with lower back pain and stabbing pain on one side that began a week ago. I thought I was pregnant but then I got my period several days late. My period was worse than normal and only lasted 3 days ending yesterday. Could something else be wrong beside an irregular period?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello.
Doctor :   please give me a couple of mins to read your query
User :   okay.
Doctor :   may i ask you a few relevant questions ?
User :   Yes.
Doctor :   may i know your age?
User :   24
Doctor :   ok , is this the first time you have had pain of this intensity or has it happened anytime earlier during your previous cycles?
User :   first time. I always get cramps with my period and they have been bad in the past but this pain isn't like the cramping I usually get.
Doctor :   ok , do you have fever or did you have fever in your last few cycles?
User :   No.
Doctor :   is the pain confined to a part of lower abdomen as in only right side or left side or is it diffuse?
User :   I have discomfort in my lower abdomen but the sharp pain is on the left side.
Doctor :   ok, how do you feel now , is it better , has the pain gone or still present with the same intensity?
User :   The discomfort is still there but the sharp pain comes and goes.
Doctor :   ok , any vomiting episodes in this cycle?
User :   No.
Doctor :   ok , you said you had the periods for only 3 days , in these 3 days , was the flow heavier than usual?
User :   No. It was actually lighter.
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   have you ever had problems like very heavy flow , continuous flow lasting for many days, irregular dates ,etc anytime in your previous cycles?
User :   I'm always regular with no flow problems. I know my period, I'm heavy for the first 3 days and lighter on the next 2 and I'm usually done after 5 days.
User :   This one wasn't normal.
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   lastly , do you have symtoms of burning urination , frequent urination, abnormal vaginal discharge/
User :   I had a UTI early this month. The days before this period and the first day of it I had frequent urination.
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   let me summarize it to you
Doctor :   more often we do not worry if a person gets such cramps and pain of more intensity than usual cycles
Doctor :   if it is the very first time
Doctor :   since you have had the cycles normal all along and the flow also being normal
Doctor :   we also think of causes like pelvic inflammatory diseases, appendicits , ovarian problems , fibroid, hormonal imbalance and even an urinary tract infection can be a cause
Doctor :   since you have had a urine infection , i feel this has increased the pain
Doctor :   urine infection can present in similar way, one may experience lower abdominal pain
Doctor :   I do not feel this could be any other reason
Doctor :   if you had any uterine problems which i mentioned above, your other cycles and the flow would have varied
Doctor :   are you with me
User :   I think so. So the UTI earlier this month caused an irregular period with increased pain?
Doctor :   yes , exactly
Doctor :   have you done a urine test?
User :   Not since first being diagnosed with the UTI on March 15.
Doctor :   ok , did you take any medicines for the same ?
User :   Cipro for 10 days.
Doctor :   ok , that is good for UTI
Doctor :   i suggest you drink lot of water and fluids daily , it really helps in UTI
Doctor :   uti can lead to pelvic inflammation
Doctor :   since you have taken antibiotics you need not worry
Doctor :   and the pain has also come down now as you said
User :   So everything should clear up soon?
Doctor :   yes , i suggest you wait for few days and watch for the pain
Doctor :   i feel the pain will not come back
Doctor :   if it does , then it could be a UTI which did not come down or you may need a gynecologist re view on this
Doctor :   if the next xyxle is normal with usual cramps , then i feel nothing to worry at all
User :   okay. good to hear.
Doctor :   i hope you followed my suggestions
Doctor :   if there is a problem in the next cycle as well , just get a scan or ultrasound done for confirmation
User :   confirmation of what?
Doctor :   confirm if there is any pelvic cause
Doctor :   like any cysts , fibroid , etc which i feel will not be there at your age
Doctor :   so i feel its just a normal period pain which has increased in intensity due to underlying urine infection
User :   great. thank you.
Doctor :   Did i answer all your questions?
User :   yes. and put my mind at ease.
Doctor :   pleasure here
Doctor :   are there any more questions i could help you with ?
User :   Nope. That was all.
Doctor :   ok , thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   we are available 24/7 for any further suggestions
Doctor :   take care .
User :   Thank you.
Doctor :   pleasure here
Doctor :   bye for now
