Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi. I had an endoscopy yesterday. The results look good - no inflammation, no esophagitis, no hernia, no rings, etc. The doctor told me it does not look like barrett's esophagus, but took a biopsy. what are the chances that the biopsy comes back positive for BE?
Doctor :   the biopsy is just to confirm the findings
Doctor :   the physical findings of the LES junction of the lower food pipe is all that is needed to know if u have barrets esophagus
User :   but how accurate are the findings via the endoscopy? I mean given the healthy looking esophagus (and I am only 30) the chances are probably pretty slim that BE turns up. I guess what I'd like to know, is (1) is it easy to tell for an experienced ENT if Barrett's is present, and (2) when someone has BE, does the esophagus look pretty banged up? I mean is there typically inflammation or strictures or a hernia?
Doctor :   for the Q 1, the ans is YES
Doctor :   for Q 2 , the ans is YES
Doctor :   in BE, the endoscopy will reveal red discoloration and elevation of the line of demarcation
Doctor :   presence of strictures are seen in very late stages and not in earlier cases
User :   what is normally associated with a BE diagnosis? hernia or strictures? I took medication for heartburn the week before the endoscopy, could the medication have masked inflammation etc? or is a week of medication too short to hide the "other symptom"? thanks
Doctor :   BE - diagnosis is made by the visual findings
Doctor :   redidish brown discolration of the lower end of the food pipe
User :   percentage wise, what are the chances of the doctor's visual findings being reversed by the biopsy? The doctor told me, "even if the biopsy comes back as BE, its less than one sonogram (sp?)
Doctor :   at the age of 30, the chances are less than 2 %
Doctor :   even if the biopsy comes back as BE,, the findings can be reversed within 6 months of medications
User :   I thought BE cannot be reversed? Can it be reversed here because it is such a small segment?
Doctor :   yes, it can be in 60% cases with treatment with medications which reduce acid secretion and anti H pylori antibiotics
Doctor :   Are u there ?
User :   yes
Doctor :   have u followed my comments ?
Doctor :   Are u there ?
User :   I have. Thank you. Basically you are telling me not to worry!?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor: thats right
Doctor :   i have actually explained what your Endoscopy reports indicate
User :   to reiterate, a BE esophagus looks unhealty in other ways than just the red discoloration at the bottom. The entire esophagus looks unhealthy or at least not "tip top shape"?
Doctor :   yes thats right
