Doctor :   How can i help you ?
User :   hi, ive been trying for a baby but i had the depo injection in november. and i havent had a period since, is there anything i could do to speeds things up.
User :   and get my body sorted
Doctor :   the depoprovera injection - once given works for about 3 months
User :   yes i know, but its been six.
Doctor :   and some side effects of depo include - absence of periods
Doctor :   which can last for 3-4 months after the effects of the depoprovera ceases
Doctor :   hence the lack of periods still, are associated with the use of depoprovera
Doctor :   but there is no need to worry
Doctor :   are u currently on any medications or birth control pills ?
User :   no im not.
Doctor :   may i know ur age ?
User :   yes im 21
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   the best way to go ahead is to test for the FSH , LH and estrogen levels
Doctor :   in case these levels are normal, it would indicate that your hypothalamus is secreting hormones properly
Doctor :   and the effect of depo has weared off
Doctor :   but in case they are slightly altered, then medications can be taken to induce ovulation
Doctor :   and then you can concieve normally
User :   when i asked my doctor about that, she said that there was nothing she could give me and i would just have to wait.
User :   just have to wait
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   was this a gynaecologist ?
User :   my g.p
Doctor :   in that case, you can take a second opinion from a OB-GYN
Doctor :   Since you are still very young, waiting for a few more months will also not be a wrong idea
Doctor :   over a few more months, your periods can resume and then you might concieve normally
User :   i new the your still young card was comming. haha
Doctor :   Im sorry if i offended you
Doctor :   but it was a professional and sound opinion
User :   no you didnt not at all. i was just worried that my body wasnt doing what it was ment to do.
Doctor :   there is no need to take additional medications to reverse the effect of a medication taken before
Doctor :   the idea of using the depo provera for short term use is not correct
Doctor :   women planning to concieve in the next 1 year, should not plan to use depoprovera
Doctor :   instead, use oral birth control pills
User :   is that how long it could take?
Doctor :   in your case, since it has already been 6 months since, the last dose, you might wait for another 3-4 months and you might have resumption of your periods
Doctor :   which initially might be irregular, but will normalize soon
Doctor :   and by the end of the year, you might have concieved normally
User :   could i still concieve before my periods return?
Doctor :   the chances are minimum, but it can happen,
Doctor :   if you concieve, with the first sucessful ovulation , then you might concieve before you have your period
Doctor :   but the chances are less
Doctor :   the first initial cycles will be anovulatory, (no ovulation) and the bleeding will be irregular
Doctor :   once the normal cycles resume, it means , ovulation is occureing properly and chances of conception are high
User :   but then i wont know when im ovulating to become pregnant, untill they become normal?
Doctor :   irregular bleeding = no ovulation
Doctor :   normal bleeding and regular cycles = proper ovulation
Doctor :   the pattern of your cycles will interprete whether they are normal or not
User :   will it return to they way it was before i had the depo shot?
Doctor :   yes they surely will
User :   so i will start ovulating normaly again, once my body has finished getting rid of the shot if you like?
Doctor :   yes
User :   i dont understand why it takes so long
Doctor :   normal cycles - depend on cyclic release of the hormones from the pituitary
Doctor :   depo provera - shot - causes inhibition of the cyclic release, by promoting a constant level of the inhibitory hormones in the blood
Doctor :   hence the cyclic pattern of release is affected and hence there is no menstrual cycles or ovulation in the ovary
Doctor :   once the effect of depo provera - stops, it takes quite a time for the pituitary gland to regain the original cyclic pattern of hormone production
Doctor :   hence this time lag of return of pituitary function, causes lack of periods
Doctor :   and hence no ovulation and hence no conception
Doctor :   the resumption of cycles may take 6 months in some women, and a bit longer in others
Doctor :   i hope you have understood so far
User :   ok i understand more now. when my periods do return is there anything i can do to boost my feritilty?
Doctor :   nothing much
Doctor :   just wait patiently
Doctor :   in case you want them urgently , then consult your OBGYN for medications
Doctor :   that can produce withdrawal bleeding
Doctor :   and ESTROGEN pills to bring up regular periods
Doctor :   i hope you have followed my advice
Doctor :   since the time has ended, please login again if you have additional questions
Doctor :   take care
Doctor :   bye for now
