User :   Hello,I am 22 year old male with a swollen lymph node on the right side of my neck. Two years ago I had a lymph node swell up in almost the same location during and following a very sore throat. That node remained swollen so it was removed to check for malignancy. Fortunately the tissue was normal. However, around two months ago I got sick again and another node became swollen. It has reduced in size since then, but still remains slightly enlarged. It was painful at first, but isn't anymore. It it firmer than it originally was, but it is easily moved around. Since this has happened twice what could the explanation be? I have no other symptoms. I haven't made an appointment yet, but I plan to see a general doctor soon.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hello
Doctor :   Are there any similar kind of nodes elsewhere in your body ?
User :   No, there is only one swollen node. Same as last time.
Doctor :   it could be scarring which has made it firm
User :   If I had to guess I would say that it is just over 1 cm in size. When I got the cold this time it was probably twice the size it is currently.
User :   In the previous case the node that was removed remained larger than 2 cm.
Doctor :   was a biopsy taken last time or a FNAC ?
User :   The node was completely removed last time.
Doctor :   is the node now at exactly the same spot
User :   no, it is just below the spot from last time. an adjacent node to the one that was removed I assume.
Doctor :   i consider there is a need for the biopsy again
Doctor :   its common for neck nodes to swell up during sore throat , but its good to get the biopsy in recurrent cases
User :   how common is it for them to remain slightly enlarged?
Doctor :   in about 60 % cases they disappear never to return
Doctor :   in rest they may remain the same or swell up in next infections
User :   so some people may have more sensitive nodes i gather?
Doctor :   yes,
User :   well I thank you for your insight Dr. I'm going to make an appointment with a doctor soon to get it checked out in person. Is a general doctor the best to begin with?
Doctor :   Surgeon will be better
User :   an Otolaryngologist?
Doctor :   yes, he can also treat it
User :   okay, thank you for your time.
Doctor :   its good to go for a surgeon once
