User :   I am 55 yr old female, with cold sores on the mouth, I was taking voltrex, and it seemed to help, but now my lips are very chapped. is this related to the cold sores
Doctor :   Hi,
User :   yes i am having chapped lips after a bout of cold sores, is this normal?
Doctor :   Since when did you had the cold sores on the lips and when did you get rid of the same ?
User :   It started about 2 wks ago, i am taking voltrex, its cleared up except for th chapped lips
Doctor :   yes, its very typical presentation
User :   is there anythign i can use to clear it up
Doctor :   applying petroleum jellies will suffice
User :   is it safe for my partner?
Doctor :   Yes, very much
Doctor :   as its a inert chemical
User :   would neosporin work also?
Doctor :   I see no need for neosporin
Doctor :   its an antibiotic , and you have no signs of infection
User :   i have had about 3 cases of this since january. ive been under alot of stress, (losing my job), in the past maybe it ahs occurred once a year. is it related to my age. 55 yrs.
Doctor :   Have you ever tried applying the jelly ?
User :   e house right nowno i have been using either neopsorin or a&d ointment. dont have petr jellie in the house right now
User :   let me retype that. i have been using neosporin or a&d ointment. i don't have the pet jellie in the house right now.
Doctor :   Ok, avoid applying neosporin as the ointment base in it may worsen the condition
Doctor :   go for a branded petroleum jelly that will help you
User :   OK. that explains why its not gettining you get over the g better. branded petroleum? like something you get over the counter.
Doctor :   yes,
Doctor :   some are available with flavors and color , cosmetically approved
User :   And it is safe for my partner if we perform oral sex?
Doctor :   yes,
User :   how about the reoccurence of it, so often this year?
Doctor :   with the jellies there would be no dust or dirt entering the cracks and heal better. Hence there would be no recurrence expected
User :   would chapstick be something you are refering to.
Doctor :   let me check the ingredients in the chapstick and advice you on it
Doctor :   Chapstick has many ingredients , there is no harm in using one not containing Oxybenzone
Doctor :   But still i would recommend a plain petroleum jelly with acceptable flavors
User :   so i should check the ingredients, and you are saying to use somethign that does not have oxybenzone
Doctor :   yes,
User :   how about Burts bees's, it is a lip balm,
Doctor :   its the same as Chaps stick
Doctor :   the same applies , avoid ones containing Oxybenzone
User :   ok, thank you. can u recommend anything?
Doctor :   Sure,
Doctor :   NIVEA lip care
User :   can i take voltrex as a precautionary medicine.
Doctor :   yes,
Doctor :   but once if you are sure of not having any sore left then do stop the Voltrex
Doctor :   But for this time, stop it.
User :   why do the lips become so chapped?
Doctor :   Its the routine process of healing
Doctor :   specially in lips
Doctor :   as there may be inhibition of oil (sebaceous ) producing cells resulting in such chapping
User :   ok thank you, now i'll go to the store and get me something for the lips. thank you.
Doctor :   You are welcome
Doctor :   Wish you speedy recovery
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   Take care
User :   thank you
