User :   My 4 year old daughter is suffering from cold in the recent days...

User :   her doctor had advised to take cetzine syrup and asthalin (for caugh)..

User :   when i refered the prescription given by the pediatrician in the past
User :   for cold ..he had advised to take odoxil

User :   woudl want to know are all the above mentioned medicines are of same purpose

User :   once he had recommended a syrup called "Advent"..

User :   could u pls kindly advise me...which one to be given to the kid..if she gets cold..( it will be usefull if we travel and not able to get in touch with the doctor)

Doctor :   How is her general health, height , weight and other milestones ?
User :   her height and weight are normal ( as par with the growth of 4 yr old kid) confirmed by the doctor

Doctor :   How often does he get respiratory infections ?
User :   also abt her general health..its good..she got cold due to climatic change...we live in its just during winter she picked up cold
User :   not very often
Doctor :   If they are very frequent we need to suspect some other causes.
Doctor :   That is very good.
User :   no..she doesnt get infected very often..she stays healthy other wise..
User :   its only due to the external factor
Doctor :   Let me first reassure you that the medication given by your Pediatrician are absolutely fine.
Doctor :   1. Odoxil is a Cephalosporin Class of Antibiotic.
User :   ok
Doctor :   2. Advent is an antibiotic with Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid.
Doctor :   These are prescribed if there seems to be a productive cough where the mucus is yellow or green .
Doctor :   Or there seems to be rhinitis where the mucus is green or yellow.
Doctor :   3. Now about Asthalin , It is a Bronchodilator which is used if the girl is suffering from wheeze or heaviness in breath.
User :   ok..if there is no productive cough & none of the symptoms are shown (like yellow/green mucus).but still the kid is having flum in the chest , which one of the above mention medicine is advisable
Doctor :   4. Cetrizine is anti-allergen drug used to decrease the anti-histaminic action due to cold or dust or an alleregn and teh body is over reacting with sneezing,eosinophilia, bronchospasm,cough,etc.
Doctor :   Usually in the west, the sputum culture & sensitivity test id done and then the drug is prescribed but in India Prescription is being done without it, which can cause resistance to these drugs over a period of time.

Doctor :   And we need to see whether the child really needs an antibiotic or not ?
User :   k..i can understand ..even my kid's doctor says if the symptoms are not reduced for over a period of time..he advises us to report to him..
Doctor :   And have to be prescribed or used very very cautiously.

Doctor :   Usually we do not prescribe Anti-biotics at the very first instance.
User :   i hv one more query..hope you can spare some more time..
Doctor :   If the symptoms persist and if the scenario is worsening then I prescribe an anti-biotic.

User :   my daughter had " pseudomonas" sepsis when she was 17 days old...

User :   it caused due to infection from the umbilicus cord..( they generaly remove the cord and place a clip) post delivery..)..
Doctor :   Yes.
User :   in her case it was told that ..the clip was not properly place..hence she got the infection..and we got her hospitalised her..
Doctor :   Was it Skin lesions or Pneumonia or UTI ?
User :   srry cudnt get u...we observed the change in her skin colour (redish) in the sarounding of naval..
Doctor :   Ok, So they were skin lesions .
User :   there were puss and blood coming out of naval after the left out part (which usualy falls off after it dries)..fell down

Doctor :   Haemorrhage of skin is the most common in kids .
User :   in one of the well known children hospital in chennai..the doctors diagonised her ..they did culture sample and they said the infection got spreaded all over the blood..and they were suspecting the infection wud hv reached the they did lumber punture test (but it came out negative)...
User :   we hv been told tht the kid needs to be in ICU and antibiotic needs to be given to clear that sepsis...for abt 14 days..

User :   they were taking test ..periodically
User :   and when it turned out to be completely nil....she has been given a clear chit that she is alright...
Doctor :   Yes , you were very lucky that it got diagnosed early and baby was treated for that.

User :   she is now 4 yrs old and healthy...apart from the normal fever ..cold..etc..
User :   we take all vaccines as per schedule..
Doctor :   You and your baby are very lucky
User :   but i always have a small fear in my mind..
Doctor :   That she has been rightly diagnosed and that the sepsis was cleared in the right time.
User :   that will the sepsis trouble my kid at any point in time in future ?
Doctor :   No,not at all.
Doctor :   Please do not worry.
User :   k..i keep browsing and read abt the ensure its not harmful for her anymore..but i dont understand many of the terms used in medical world..
Doctor :   This is not like Staph bacterium causing long term heart or joint complications.
