Doctor :   According to your description,
Doctor :   it appears that your kid is suffering from an upper respiratory infection or bronchitis.
User :   k
Doctor :   The most common cause of such infection is a viral infection.
User :   k
Doctor :   I presume the same to be with your infant too.
User :   k
Doctor :   These infections are usually self limiting ones which settle on its own in a week or so.
Doctor :   However if cough and fever persists for more than a week
Doctor :   a chest examination and chest xrays may be needed.
Doctor :   Since you report that fever is settling, I expect that the present cough will slowly fade away soon.
Doctor :   You need to continue the expectorant suggested to you.
Doctor :   (expectorant can increase the cough
User :   but doc has suggested for 7 days
User :   today its already 6 days over
User :   am scared to give him more medicine
Doctor :   initially and later reduce).
Doctor :   Along with these medication, you can use saline nasal drops - 2 drops applied to each nostril twice a day.
User :   ok
Doctor :   They will help in reducing the nasal congestion.
User :   ok
Doctor :   As I said viral illness is the most common,
Doctor :   persisting viral illness can some times get secondarily infected by bacteria.
User :   k
Doctor :   In such circumstances, antibiotic therapy is essential.
User :   k
Doctor :   Now since you describe that you child is active
Doctor :   not drowsy
Doctor :   and has no fever,
Doctor :   I do not feel that there is a bacterial infection now.
User :   ok
Doctor :   However, if symptoms persist, antibiotic syrups can be used inorder to prevent the bacterial infection .
Doctor :   So, if you feel that his symptoms are persisting after a day or 2,
Doctor :   or if your child develops fever, or other symptoms such as increase cough, drowsiness, highly irritable develop
User :   k
Doctor :   report back to your pediatrician
User :   k
