User :   can a mole develop a notch and still be benign? mine used to be round, and now has a very small divot (the mole itself is very small), and I'm just wondering how concerned I should be about this. Recently got screened by my dermatologist (I recently had a Basal Cell cancer removed), and he suggested monitoring the mole but not biopsying it at this point. Trouble was, I had rubbed at it, so it was in a scabby state and hard to analyze. He said to come back in six months, but I'm wondering if I need to get it biopsied now. And again, can there be benign reasons for a mole to develop a subtle notch?
Thank You.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read
Doctor :   where sis the mole situated ?
User :   near my bicep
Doctor :   the mole near the bicep going for basal cell carcinoma is very very rare
User :   what i'm concerned about is melanoma
Doctor :   where was the basal cell carcinoma which was removed recently ?
User :   my nose
Doctor :   that is the typical site for the basal cell carcinoma to occur
Doctor :   regarding the melanoma
Doctor :   does the mole increased in size rapidly recently ?
User :   no
User :   it just developed this little notch- an absence of color.
User :   now it's heart-shaped
Doctor :   is there any itching ?
User :   no
Doctor :   is the size of the mole more than 6 mm ?
User :   no. I'd say it's about 3 mm.
Doctor :   it is very unlikely to be a melanoma
Doctor :   you need to observe the following
Doctor :   the most important is
Doctor :   rapid change in the size
Doctor :   border of the mole is it irregular or not
User :   well, there's that notch...
Doctor :   diameter of the mole if more than 6 mm
Doctor :   well does the presence of single notch does say it is melanoma ?
User :   i don't know.
Doctor :   than why do you worry so much
Doctor :   as described above if you find any combination of the signs
Doctor :   than you need to present to dermatologist
Doctor :   for the biopsy
Doctor :   unnecessarily don't get worried
User :   so for now you think it's safe to wait and monitor? i just wonder why that notch would appear...
Doctor :   yes now it is to be monitored
