Doctor :   hi
User :   hi
Doctor :   Dr XXXX here
User :   do you have a copy of my question or do i need to repeat it
Doctor :   sorry can u repeat it, i have not recieved it
User :   female, 58, last physical showed esr of 40, previous years, esr around 5 or 6. recently went from hypothyroid to hyperthyroid. now tsh and t4 back in normal range. also diagnosed with high cortisol levels and have begun treatment with relora. would the thyroid or the cortisol cause the esr of 40?
Doctor :   let me read it
Doctor :   no, ESR may be elevated due to the associated compnent of inflammation in your case
Doctor :   the presence of some elevated inflammation or leucocyte reaction, can cause high ESR
Doctor :   are u there ?
Doctor :   can u tell me the cause of your hypothyroidism & hyperthyrodism ?
User :   i had read that low cortisol could cause higher esr and that higher esr could be related to thyroid problems.
Doctor :   was it hashimotos or something else ?
Doctor :   ESR is not specifically rased in these condtions, it is due to the associated inflammation in this situation
User :   as i increased the thyroid meds the tsh and t4 went nuts, so i stopped until they were back to normal then started low dose again
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   but was any biopsy done or any study done to know, why u r hypothyroid?
User :   this past summer, i had what seemed like a stomach virus that lasted for weeks. am now taking probiotics for gi. would that have caused the inflammation?
Doctor :   not as such, probiotics dont cause high ESR
User :   still testing thyroid. t3 test results not back yet
User :   not the probiotics but the virus
Doctor :   OK
Doctor :   the virus, can cause high ESR but that will be short lived
Doctor :   and not needed to worry
User :   also found out that i'm gluten intolerant.
Doctor :   that is the diagnosis for you
Doctor :   gluten intolerance can cause high ESR
Doctor :   AS THIS is a form of chronic inflammation
Doctor :   hence this elevates the ESR
Doctor :   also this also predisposes to other conditions like autoimmune hypothyroidism etc
User :   but i've always eaten gluten products and last year esr was 5. does gluten intolerance get worse as you age?
Doctor :   no, if u change the diet, it gets over a normal
Doctor :   change the diet and you will be ok
User :   ok, thanks
Doctor :   you are welcome
