User :   Hello, I have been ill since Feb this year when I reacted to Metronidazole taken for a suspected Fallopian Tube infection. I developed a severe headache, tingling all over my body, waves of heat and deep pain in left thigh and bottom. An MRI was done fairly early on in April, which was clear and a Nerve Conduction Study and EMG in June was also clear. However unfortunately due to lack of sleep because of the pain and insomnia in deperation I started Zolpidem which I was perscribed for about 3 months. In this time my hands and feet have became fairly numb and so I decided to discontine the Zolpidem two weeks ago. In the past two weeks my symptoms have deteriorated significantly, there is a burning pain all over my body and the deep pain is now in my hips and shoulders above my biceps. I also have muscle cramps all over my body. I now attribute this deterioration in the past few weeks due to withdrawal of the Zolpidem which I have discovered can cause nerve pain. In addition, I was given a Skin Hole Punch Biopsy about a month ago. This showed normal numbers of nerve fibres in the spidermis. However there was a suggestion of increased numbers of nerve fibres with the marker GAP 43, which is a marker for regenerating nerves. I do not really understand this. I was told the biopsy showed inflammation, does this mean neuritis and if so could I get better and how?
Thank you. XXX
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr XXX here
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Yes it is Neuritis
Doctor :   It would definetly get better but will require time
User :   Please could you tell me how do you know it is neuritis?
Doctor :   The reactions are triggered by drug adverse effects will subside once the drug is completly flushed from the body
Doctor :   Neuritis is a condition where there is inflamation of nerves
User :   I have been ill since February and am in severe pain, I take Gapapentin with little relief.
Doctor :   Only in that case there are invcreased no of nerve fibres are visualised
User :   I do not understand your last comment, so sorry
Doctor :   That the apt drug for your pain relief
Doctor :   There is incresed no of nerve fibres only when an inflamtion is present
User :   Only in that case there are invcreased no of nerve fibres are visualised - this is the comment I do not understand.
Doctor :   I meant they are increased nerve fibres following inflamtion
User :   I see now, thank you. I am very reticent now to take any drugs.
Doctor :   See it not necessary for all drugs to result in adverse reactions
Doctor :   Few drugs are prone to cause which requires cautiouss administration
Doctor :   Need not be recitant to drugs
Doctor :   Wishing you a speedy recovery
User :   How long could this take?
Doctor :   Probably a month after regular meds
User :   But I have been poorly since Feb and deteriorated
Doctor :   Since its a neurological involvement requires regular meds and proper rest sure will get well sonn
User :   Which meds?
Doctor :   All needed is time as it taked time for regenration and back to normal
Doctor: Gabapentin
Doctor :   Its an pain killer with neurostimulant
Doctor :   Improves nerve conduction
User :   I see. Could the Zolpidem have caused permanent damage?
Doctor :   I guess its more probably due to metronidiazole
Doctor :   Zolpiderm according my experince have not caused such issues
User :   I have tried to research Zolpidem and I have deteriorated since starting and further since withdrawing
Doctor :   Zolpiderm is an antidepressant withdrawal will have sleepness. irritability. loss of appetite. mood upsets etc
User :   Intravenous immunoglobulins have been suggested
Doctor :   Did you follow
Doctor :   Yes they help in early recovery
User :   Who would admisister these
Doctor :   Was any diagnosis made?
Doctor :   Neurologist
User :   No not apart from inflammation, but I am in severe pain
Doctor :   Ok
User :   Is neuritis in itself not a diagnosis?
Doctor :   Yes
Doctor :   Its an symptom
User :   Does there have to be an underlying disease
Doctor :   Probably yes
User :   So I need further test, which ones
Doctor :   I guess they have already made without which
Doctor :   Intravenous immunoglobins are not prescribed
User :   i don't understand
Doctor :   The drug is suggested for a few conditions only
Doctor :   Bye for now
