User : Hi. I started getting a cold about 5 days or so ago which was followed by a cough. Right after that, my ear started to plug up and it started crackling & popping (as if I was on an airplane). Yesterday, it started to drain a clear fluid & a little blood. My doctor's office is closed today and the walk in clinic is full & wouldn't take me. My friend had this before & she said it was an eardrum problem? Can you tell me what I should be doing? I have no fever, feel pretty good except for the cough & the plugged ear. I am a female, 58 years old & caught this cold & cough thing from my daughter.
Doctor : Hi
Doctor : I am Dr.xxx
Doctor : Let me read your query
User : Sure. Thanks.
Doctor : Ok
Doctor : Now, such blockage it could be due to the the pressure to the middle ear tube
Doctor : from the throat
Doctor : which is quite common in an upper respiratory tract disturbance
Doctor : for now, you should take just symptomatic treatment
Doctor : for cold
Doctor : and consult your doctor for an ear examination
Doctor : if it is an ear drum puncture
User : I only have been taking Nyquil at night for the cough to help me sleep.
Doctor : then you shall feel a liquid oozing out
User : The drainage isn't a serious thing?
Doctor : Yes, Nyquil is fine enough
Doctor : no, it is not a serious prolbme
Doctor : you should not worry
Doctor : You can wait for your doctor's appointment
User : Thanks. If it is an eardrum problem, does the eardrum heal on it's own?
Doctor : It does require antibiotics in that case
Doctor : if an infection is confirmed
Doctor : after an examination
User : Ok...I feel a little better. So basically, the cold (or sinus, whatever it is) and the cough is probably what caused this ear thing?
Doctor : Right
User : Should I be taking some kind of decongestant or wouldn't that help?
Doctor : It does help
Doctor : like pseudoephedrine
Doctor : NyQuil sinus does contain a decongestant
Doctor : that is phenylephrine
User : Ok, well, thank you very much. I was a little concerned about blood draining from my ear. YOu have put my mind at ease.
Doctor : Thanks for consulting, bye for now
User : Bye. Have a good day
