User :   My 9 year old daughter has had really strong body odor for at least a year now. She still wets the bed. Her urine smells very strong. I have never smelled any urine before hat smells this awful. I took her to her pediatrician and they checked her urine and said it was fine. She also has gender issues. She dresses like a boy down to her choice of underwear and has a very short haircut. No pink or dresses for her! i am thinking this is hormones? Please help! I don't know what to do!
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   Dr XXX here
User :   Hello
Doctor :   please give me a minute to read your post
Doctor :   no,
Doctor :   i do not think any hormonal issue in your child
Doctor :   the smell of urine may be more in high catabolic stetes
Doctor :   states*
Doctor :   and dressing like a boy as you said , you may have to take your child to a child Psycologist
Doctor :   who can read her ideas about the dressing and other issues
User :   She weighs about 100 lbs., and has pubic and underarm hair. No menstruation yet. She shaved her legs last night for the first time, so I am very confused about the gender thing. Please explain the urine issue some more. She eats well and drinks plenty of fluids including water. Still bedwetting.
Doctor :   The bed wetting may be due to the nocturnal neurogenic bladder , common in children but self limiting
Doctor :   and catabolic state means the child is digesting the food and protiens well since its a fast growing age , the by products of the food catabolism will be thrown out in the urine which do give it a bad odour
Doctor :   in other words more urea and more ammonia , which are the end waste products of the protien metabolism
Doctor :   which give the urine aromatic to pungent odour
Doctor :   and the behaviour you mentioning , should be dealt with a child psychiatrist first , before considering any hormonal imbalance
User :   Ok. So nothing to worry about with the urine?
Doctor :   yes, need not worry about the urine
Doctor :   but you go for child psychiatrist for sure
User :   Very helpful thank you. I have a 3 yr old who I was told has hemoglobin C trait. Anything to worry about with that?
Doctor :   May i know the gender of the baby ?
User :   Female
Doctor :   ok, may i know whether the trait is homozygous or heterozygous ?
User :   I am not sure, but I believe from the Father's side of family? I know of no others in the family with this?
Doctor :   if so its heterozygous
Doctor :   its not dangerous but needs a keen observation on RBC count and morphology and the haemoglobin levels
Doctor :   heterozygous is much less problematic than homo
Doctor :   child should be monitored for anaemia, gall stones and skeletal abnormalities
Doctor :   its not a life threatening
User :   Thank you for the information. It is much more than the pediatrician has told me. Now that I know the differences with the trait I will further research. Thank you for your time and have a great evening/morning/afternoon wherever you are!
