User : I am a 48 year old peri-menopausal female. I had carpal tunnel release surgery on my right hand the last week of April . During the first two weeks of May I was diagnosed with mastitis in my right breast. The area below the nipple was red to pink. I was prescribed 14 days of dicloxicillin. The infection was better, but not gone. A week later I went to see a breast specialist who prescribed 14 days of augmentin. The infection seemed to be even better, but still not gone. I had a week off of antibiotics, then was prescribed another 14 days of augmentin. The infection looks even better, but still not gone. I was told to get a refill on my Rx by the breast specialist, so I have now had 3 weeks of augmentin. I had an ultrasound done [which was extrememly painful]. The radiologist said the ultrasound showed enlarged ducts. I am now taking my 4th week of augmentin, then will have a diagnostic mammogram done. I am very scared of inflammatory breast cancer. The area on my breast and under my nipple is pink in color. Do you think I have mastitis or IBC?

User : no, other than slighty darker pink on part of the bottom portion.
Doctor : Is it a recent change?
User : The pink color started the beginning of May, when I was diagnosed with mastitis. It started out more of a dark pink, almost red. It is now light pink.
Doctor : From what you have said it doesn't looks like a case of IBC.
User : I will be having a skin biopsy after I have the mammogram. Will the defintely rule out IBC?
Doctor : Yes.
User : Do you think I picked up this infection from the hospital during my surgery? I had no cracks or openings on my breast.
Doctor : There is a possibility.
User : How often do women my age contract non lactating mastitis?
Doctor : Not very often.
User : That is why I am worried about IBC. It seems that I cannot rest until I get the skin biopsy done and receive the results?
Doctor : You need to calm down
User : I know, I just don't know how.
Doctor : In your case it doesn't look like one.
User : O.k., I will hope for the best.
