User:hello doctor
User:i have baby who is 1 month old
User:the issue is he has got the habit or we can say addiction of continuoslly drinking breast milk
User:its like there should be something in his mouth
User:even though he is full..he wants it in his mouth
User:how do i make him avoid this addiction
Doctor:ok pacifiers are available. You should sterilize them well, keep a stock of pacifiers and use them.
Doctor:They mimic the nipple
Doctor:some argue that can cause infection but as long as we sterilize them well with boiling water it is fine
User:ok...but that will also be addiction right doctor
Doctor:No slowly the baby understands it as artificial nipple and no milk comes out of it
Doctor:then they leave it
Doctor:for good
User:he keeps on taking nap of 15 mins day time...and night he hardly sleeps
User:i mean for continuos strech
User:some nights he sleeps and sometimes he doesnt
Doctor:Oh that you got to bear with patience but soon he understands the rythm
Doctor:and it takes 2 to 3 months age
User:how do i know that breast milk is sufficient for him
User:currenly he burps and the stomach also seems to be full
Doctor:Do you mean after each feed?
User:and he pases urine frequentlyt
User:after feed
Doctor:They are reluctent to hold the nipple, the stomach appears full. Generally each breast counts upto 10 minutes, so two breast take 10 min
Doctor:so total 15 to 20 min of feed each time
User:what should be the interval of feed...every 2 hrs?
Doctor:The current recommendations is 'On demand'
Doctor:so you can say from 8 to 12 feeds a day
User:is breast milk sufficient or do we need to feed formula
Doctor:till 6 months
Doctor:No only breast milk
Doctor:unless you find the baby not interested or not taking
Doctor:or the supply is less than demand
User:currently we are not understanding that it is demand or simply the addiction
User:but whenever he is fed..we feed continuosly for 1 hrs
User:trying to keep him awake
Doctor:ok best way is if you had fed for 15 minutes then the need is only after 2 hours
Doctor:Make sure the feeding is done in the middle of the cot, preferably sitting, observing the baby drinking and with calm mind
Doctor:The mom generally can understand that the baby is sucking efficiently, if so then she can shift to other breast in 10 minutes
Doctor:and then 10 more min there
Doctor:Followed by burping
Doctor:on the shoulder
Doctor:Did you understand it?
Doctor:Do you have any more queries?
User:yes..we do follow this
User:yes one last question
User:he streches his body just like hoe we elders do
User:why does he do that
Doctor:That is ok
Doctor:That is normal
Doctor:No worries about that
Doctor:IT helps them build inner warmth
Doctor:to the muscles
Doctor:They spend calories to generate that warmth
User:thats it doctor
Doctor:Ok great
User:thank you so much
Doctor:Have a nice time nursing, it is so beautiful and you should enjoy
Doctor:Bye for now.
