User:Hello Dr.
Doctor:welcome to XXXXXXX
User:I have a question regarding appendicitis
User:how do I determine if the surgery is required or not and when should I undergo the same?
User:As of now 2 USGs were done, one reported appendicitis and other said none. I am little confused now and the consultant Dr. suggested to visit a surgeon
Doctor:the need for surgery depends on the severity of the symptoms, your medical condition and the findings on the uLTRASOUND or the CT scan
Doctor:which was the recent scan ? and what was the findings of the recent one ?
User:one sec...let me type the exact wordings
User:Under Right Iliac Fossa :-
User:No USG detectable tender tubular SOL or localised fluid collection is seen. Possibility of recurrent / chronic appendicitis to be correlated clinically & other investigations as indicated.
Doctor:is that it ?
User:Well...we have "Both Kidneys", "Urinary Bladder" etc etc
Doctor:Do u happen to have any symptoms or clinical issues ?
User:well it's for my wife and no she didnt have such symptoms etc
User:if we can call a lower abdominal pain a sympton, then yes thats the only one we have
Doctor:and how often does she have it ?
Doctor:on a daily basis , and does it affect the regular daily activities ?
User:she have a mild pain through out the day
User:and no it doesn't affect the daily activities
Doctor:in that case, she might be having a chronic appendicitis
Doctor:first , to determine if surgery will help or not, you may consult a General surgeon, who can examine you
Doctor:he might opt for a CT scan, if needed , to know the exact condition
Doctor:if the CT shows major abnormal changes, then surgery may be opted for
Doctor:or else, he will advice you for a medical management
User:ok and what's medical management ?
Doctor:it is with medicines (antibiotics)
User:ah, thanks Dr.
Doctor:You are welcome
User:one last question
User:I was told that if the surgeon suggest surgery then there are 2 ways for a appendicitis surgery etc
User:can you please help me with that
Doctor:either it is a laparoscopic surgery or a open surgery
Doctor:open surgery is usually when the condition is complicated, and extent of involvement is more
Doctor:but in general , laparoscopic surgery is done , in most cases
User:thanks much Dr.
Doctor:laparoscopic surgery, is done using a small camera introduced via 3 small holes in the abdominal wall, hence causes less discomfort and less scarring . BUT open surgery causes severe scarring
Doctor:the surgeon, will decide to go for the type of procdure needed
User:sure and thanks again
