User :   Hello! My son is 12.4 years old. He has always had enlarged adenoids and was scheduled for surgery when he was 4, but we canceled it. He still has a hard time breathing and he says that during the night he wakes up out of breath, does he still need surgery or should they start shrinking soon?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Adenoids usually start shrinking in size as the kids grow
Doctor :   and usually they are not found as the age of puberty reaches.
User :   Yes, I know that. My question is if he still has issues with breathing and feels out of breath during the night and wakes up out of breath, does he still have adenoid isssues or something else?
Doctor :   However persistently inflammed /chronic adnenoiditis need surgical removal.
Doctor :   Now sitting at one end of the computer without physically examination, I cannot predict the changes that has happened in the adenoids.
User :   so if he has chronic adnenoiditis getting closer to puberty will not shrink them?
Doctor :   If the symptoms are recurring, adenoids can persist to remain for a much longer time.
Doctor :   So if that is case, instead of waiting for it to shrink, removal of adenoids may be necessary.
Doctor :   Again, the need for surgery at this time, is mainly dependent on how recurrent his symptoms have been and the clinical examination findings.
Doctor :   So my answer to your initial query is though adenoids regress as age grows, a very frequent inflammation, chronic inflammation/hypertrophied adenoids may more time to regress
Doctor :   in which case surgical treatment can be an option of treatment.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   Yes, thank you!
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   No thank you!
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
User :   Bye
