User :   Hello I am a 50 yr old female who is a bone marrow donor match for my brother. He was in remission for only a few months. I am a 10 pt match for him. They need to get him back in remission (he is 61) before they will do the stem cell transplant from my blood. I smoke pot pretty frequently and of course he does not know this. How will this affect my physical that they will give me to make sure I have nothing life threatening to give him. I am so afraid my family will find out. I want to be his donor but now will this stop me?
Doctor :   hello
User :   Hello
Doctor :   give me a min please , let me go thru your query
User :   He has AML
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   how often do you smoke pot and since how long have you been doing it ?
User :   35 yrs
Doctor :   do you have any other medical condition ?
User :   Well as far as I know none. My family doctor knows that I am a donor match but he has not asked me if I smoke pot. I do not want anyone knowing except the Drs. of course.
Doctor :   sure thats a good decision
Doctor :   and are you still smoking ?
User :   I have been recently diagnosed with a skin condition but I was told it would not interfere. Granuloma Annulare
Doctor :   yes that will not be a issue in bone marrow transplant
User :   I haven't smoked today. I can say that I have gone without it for weeks on end and yrs as well when I was pregnant with my 2 kids.
Doctor :   and when is the transplant due ?
User :   I also know it will not get out of my system even if I stopped today.
User :   Well it depends on him getting back in remission. He is being admitted inot the hospital again tomorrow for a week of chemo and will stay until his #'s climb
Doctor :   ok now here is what you HAVE TO DO .... is complete no no to smoking
Doctor :   thats very crucial
Doctor :   its ok you can be a perfect donor and your habit will not interfere ONLY IF YOU STOP NOW
Doctor :   thats very importnat
User :   Is there anything else I can do before the physical? I don't even know when that will be yet too.
Doctor :   well yes you sure can
Doctor :   diet is crucial
Doctor :   healthy
Doctor :   avoid junk food
User :   I will stop now but what if the physical comes before it is out of my system?
Doctor :   if it after 2 weeks then it wont
Doctor :   but you really have to stop
User :   I am trying to eat healthier but it is also scary to think this might stop me from being his match.
Doctor :   well dont worry
Doctor :   make sure you stay healthy and dont smoke any more then its nothing to worry about
User :   So besides stopping now and eating right which I do , I don't drink or do any other illegal drugs. I want to be the healthiest match for him.
Doctor :   yes you will be
User :   I quite smoking cigerrettes 2/11/11 so all of this at once is hard.
Doctor :   you need to be motivated
Doctor :   you are doing a good deed
Doctor :   stay positive
User :   I did that for me first and then him. I have to feel positive for him. He will sense something is wrong.
Doctor :   dont worry you will do fine
User :   His Dr's haven't contacted me yet. I will be honest with them and hope they will allow me to be his donor?
