Recovery after hysterectomy

After hysterectomy the recovery time depends on one patient to other patient. It also depends on the type of hysterectomy done like abdominal or vaginal.


The person who has undergone laparoscopic hysterectomy.

After 24 hours of the operation patient can take normal diet if there is no vomiting and if the patient has passed gas and the bowel sounds are heard.

The patient who has undergone hysterectomy can return to their home after 48 hours of the operation. They are also discharged on the point that they are able to take orally without any vomiting. The patient is discharged home with prescription of antibiotics and pain killers. Iron and calcium tablets are also prescribed for 3 months. Usually slight bleeding per vagina is quite common after hysterectomy. Patient should report immediately to the doctor if they have any pus discharge, sever pain, fever, calf pain etc.

All the normal activities can be resumed by 4-6 weeks.

Persons who has undergone laparoscopic hysterectomy will be able to do their normal activities within two weeks, where those who have undergone open abdominal surgery requires at least 6 weeks after surgery for complete recovery. Patients should not lift any overweight objects for at least 6 weeks after surgery.

Woman can return back to their sexual like after 6-8 weeks.

Do’s after hysterectomy

  • Take the medications like antibiotics, pain killers, and iron and calcium tablets as prescribed by the doctor.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent constipation. Take at least 8-10 glasses of water.

  • Take enough of rest and adequate sleep.

  • Eat healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, salads, greens, iron rich foods, high fiber foods

  • If there is constipation ask your doctors for mild laxatives.

  • Take a multivitamin/mineral tablets daily.

 Don’ts after hysterectomy

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects more than 10 pounds at least for 6 weeks.

  • Do not climb stairs or drive a car during the hysterectomy recovery period

  • Avoid any kind of sexual activity for at least 6-8 weeks after the surgery
