Medications in motion sickness

The best way to treat motion sickness is to stop the motion. If you can't stop the motion, sit or lie down in an area with the least motion. Treatment includes mainly medications and natural care

Natural

The common suggestion is to simply look out of the window of the moving vehicle and to gaze toward the horizon in the direction of travel. This helps to re-orient the inner sense of balance by providing a visual reaffirmation of motion.

Fresh, cool air relieves motion sickness slightly, although it is likely this is related to avoiding foul odors which can worsen nausea.

In the night/ship without windows, ideal is to simply close the eyes, or if possible, take a nap. This resolves the input conflict between the eyes and the inner ear. Napping also helps prevent psychogenic effects (i.e. the effect of sickness being magnified by thinking about it).

Medications for motion sickness

Over the counter medications- Dimenhydrinate, Cinnarizine, and Meclizine

Prevention of motion sickness

  • Avoid excessive alcohol and foods (spicy, oily, fatty foods) or liquids.
  • Avoid strong food odors- to prevent nausea
  • Try to choose a car seat where you will experience the least motion.
  • On a ship, those in lower level cabins near the center of a ship generally experience less motion than passengers in higher or outer cabins.
  • Do not sit facing backwards from your direction of travel. Sit in the front seat of the car.
  • Do not read and write while traveling if you are prone to motion sickness.
  • Ventilation or air circulation is very important.
