The surgical procedure or knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to replace weight bearing surfaces of the knee joint to decrease the pain and disabilities of osteoarthritis. It is also seen in other diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

 

It is the most common orthopedic surgery which is performed. It is an elective surgery. It is usually done when the other non surgical methods of treatment like activity modification, weight loss, medications and injections

Types

There are two types of knee replacement surgeries

  • Total knee replacement

  • Partial knee replacement

 Indications of knee replacement surgeries

  • If there is pain which limits the activities like walking, climbing stairs.

  • If there is limited function or mobility like chronic knee stiffness

  • If the other methods will not relieve the symptoms like resting, weight loss, physical therapy, using walking aids medications, braces and surgery.

  • If there is any knee joint deformity

  • If the age is 55 or older having

 Risk factors for knee replacement

  • Infection

  • Knee stiffness

  • Blood clots in the leg vein

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Nerve damage

 Contraindications for the surgery

  • Active infection in the knee

  • Infection anywhere in the body

  • Poor circulation

  • Neurological disease affecting the extremity
