High resolution computed tomography is a major advance in diagnostic imaging which provides two dimensional image. A CT scan identifies gross distortions in local anatomy by using difference in x-ray beam attentuation that results from different densities in adjacent tissues.

CT scan can visualize abnormal massess but definitive pathologic diagnosis is established only with surgical biopsy. CT scan is more expensive than ultrasound.
