Statins (or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors ) are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase , which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol in the liver . Increased cholesterol levels have been associated with cardiovascular diseases , Statins have rare but severe adverse effects, particularly muscle damage, and some doctors believe they are overprescribed. The best-selling statin is atorvastatin , marketed as Lipitor (manufactured by Pfizer ) and Torvast. By 2003 atorvastatin became the best-selling pharmaceutical in history, with Pfizer reporting sales of US$ 12.4 billion in 2008. As of 2010, a number of statins are on the market: atorvastatin (Lipitor and Torvast), fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor, Altoprev), pitavastatin (Livalo, Pitava), pravastatin (Pravachol, Selektine, Lipostat), rosuvastatin (Crestor) and simvastatin (Zocor, Lipex). Several combination preparations of a statin and another agent, such as ezetimibe/simvastatin , are also available.

Thank you so much for your expert advice. I find that when I am on satins I do get muscle aches but it is the feeling of nausea that causes me the most problems. I am on other medication for another medical condition and it may the combination of both that is bringing about the feeling of sickness.

Besides the obvious like less meat intake. When thats just not enough, because your body itself is making too much. Is there a way to get your body to make less cholesterol? I have just had my yearly cholesterol results and I have gone up 2 points despite a fairly rigid diet . I am 5 5 and weigh 125lbs, I take 20mg statin tabs daily, drink pomegranet juice and only use pro-active spreads - no chocolates etc. HELP how can I bring my level down?
