Medial tibial stress syndrome or shin splints is a common injury that affects athletes who engage in running sports or basic activities such as cross country, football, or hiking. MTSS injuries affect the connective muscle tissue surrounding the tibia (bone located near the lower leg). This injury is brought on by one of the following: exerting too much pressure on the lower leg muscles or excessive impact on the muscle. Consequences of severe MTSS can result in, at worst, broken bones.

I injured both of my shins on April 6th. I was working out doing box jumps (jumping onto a 22 high stationary square box) when I hesitated mid jump and landed on the edge of the box with both shins. They were both gashed open, immediately bruised and swollen. I iced them within 20 minutes and kept them elevated. I went about a week later to have...

Hi, I got struck on the shin with a cricket ball 7 days ago (Saturday) I had no pain until 4 days later. When I could hardly Walk. Since then bruising has come out on my calf (even though impact was on shin). Basically from my knee down to my ankle keeps swelling up to about twice its normal size. What do you suggest?

I took a kick to the shin in karate last Saturday. Its now Thursday. My shin is pretty bruised, and there is a lump, and its somewhat numb to the touch. Every now and then I have a strange sensation when I walk, (Not painful, but almost like like the lump is moving around, kind of tingly..) sorry its the only way to describe it. Is that normal?

Hi! I m a gymnast, and at one of my competitions I fell off the beam and hit my shin pretty hard. It immediately swelled up. This happened about a week ago, and it s still just as swollen as when it happened. It s just like a huge lump on my shin, and all around it it is bruised. It s painful to touch and put any pressure on that leg. Any...
Hi, I started running 3 weeks ago. My trainer took us on a 6k run last Saturday. I was find initially, but my leg became sore as the day went on. I have pain along the front of my leg (shin) and particularly where my shin meets my foot , and pain along my thigh. This morning my heel went numb. The pain is dull, rather than sharp/ acute, but...
