Bad Breath Problem. Can It Be Because Of Stomach Acid?

Hi, Recently I am suffering from having a bad breath. My dentist told me my teeth are fine and that my bad breath is probably caused by my stomach acid. A chinese doctor/acupuncturist also told me that I have a bad breath, due to my stomach is not working properly. I have noticed I have a bad breath, dry mouth and a white tongue after I have not talked for a while or after enjoyed my meal. Now I am really worried and start to link everything with my stomach, because last year I have had a stomach reflux . Additional information is that I do not smoke any tobaco, have a skinny body and I am only 22.

Dentist Dr. Neha Gupta's  Response
Hello,
I am Dr.Neha Gupta (dentist) and am glad to address to your query here.

Some stomach problems can be treated, some cannot. Ulcers, diabetes, liver diseases, acid reflux disease cause long-term stomach problems that can effect a person's breath. Make sure you're getting enough vitamins C and B, as well as zinc, since deficiencies of these can also cause halitosis.

Chewing on fennel, parsley, cardamon or filberts can temporarily and quickly sweeten your breath. Add lemon juice to your eight 8 oz. glasses of water, as lemon juice can eliminate odors in your mouth and esophagus. Make a cup of peppermint tea; peppermint tea soothes an upset stomach while freshening breath at the same time. Finding the underlying reason for the stomach problem that is causing bad breath is crucial. It's the first step to curing bad breath.

Take care and please keep me informed of your progress at healthcaremagic through my profile directly.

hello and welcome to HCM,

Bad or fowl mouth odor is caused by number of reasons such as;

Poor oral hygiene , improper brushing techinques which lead to accumulation of food debris and bacterial plaque and calculus deposits deep in the gum pockets and root surfaces of the teeth .
bacterial plaque and calculus on the teeth gives fowl odor.

Gingivitis and periodontitis is another condition which leads to fowl mouth odor.

Ulceration when infected with bacterial or viral invasion may lead to fowl smell.

alcohol consumption alos promotes plaque deposition and gives fowl odor.

as you have mentioned stomach reflux , GERD and other gastric problems may also lead to acidic mouth odor , you need to consult a physician to get the problem confirmed.

i would suggest you to go for professional scaling and root planing of all the teeth , maintain good oral hygiene by regular tooth brushing and flossing.

use antiseptic oral rinse for daily mouth rinsing helps in reducing the mal odor.

i hope this helps ,

take care.
