What Is The Cause Of A Black Tongue?

I am a 71 year old male. At the dentists office yesterday, she mentioned my black tongue. Didn"t think much about it til I got home and looked in the mirror. What a shock! brushed some away. But have plenty in the back of the tongue. Can you tell me what causes this condition? Thank you

Hello, Welcome Thanks for consulting HCM,

I have gone through your query, as you have mentioned that you have black tongue dont worry it can be due to nutrional deficiency or due to depapillation of papillae,

You do is maintaine proper oral hygiene ,
Properly cleaning of tongue ,
Take vitamin B 6, B12 supplements one tablet once daily for one week

If then you wont get relief then go to dentist for oral examination and investigations if necessary go for biopsy
Hope this will help you.
Wishing you good health.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
Black tongue is a condition where the tongue surface turns dark. It is caused by overgrowth of fungi or bacteria in the mouth, bad oral sanitation, heavy smoking, drinking very hot coffee/tea and excessive intake of antibiotics.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
