What Is The Cause Of Cold Hands And Feet?

Hi, My fingers get so cold that they hurt when I'm outside in the cold weather or in the warm house. If I try to heat them they hurt worse weather by warm water or heater. They feel like someone dropped a sledge hammer on them. It makes me cry cause it hurts so bad, even after I've been in the house for 15 minutes. I do have arthritis, and the ulnar nerve was moved in my elbows, as well as hypothyroidism. But I only weigh 94 lbs. and don't have high blood pressure, no diabetes. My feet are constantly cold also and can't ever seem to keep them warm, even if I wear slippers and socks. My husband doesn't even let me get near him at night with my cold hands and feet. At one time years ago, I had scarlet fever where my skin peeled back from my fingers and ever since then they have been very sensitive to heat and cold. Any ideas would be appreciated since living in Oregon its hard to escape the cold weather till June !!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,

There are number of things that cause cold hand and feet, such as:
Poor circulation due to coronary heart disease
Raynaud's disease (disorder that affects the flow of blood to the fingers and sometimes to the toes)
Frostbite
Working with vibrating equipment (like a jackhammer)
A side-effect of taking certain medications
An underlying disease affecting blood flow in the tiny blood vessels of the skin. (Women smokers may be prone to this).
Stress

I would suggest getting this evaluated by a physician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management
