What Causes Prolonged Periods?

Hello Doctor, few months back my wife had prolonged periods (approx 15 days) for two subsequent months, we consulted few gynaecologists. As per their instruction, we did various tests like Full Abdomen USG, TVS, Hormone Tests (TSH, etc), Pap Smear Test, but all the reports were normal. Later doctor prescribed Novelon and asked us to continue for years. And, in case heavy bleeding takes place, they suggested taking Pause-MF or Trapic-MF on SOS basis. She was having Novelon for last 6 months, and, for last 4 months her periods were normal. But this month she started having bleeding (on 19th day), its neither spotting, nor continuous bleeding, but sufficient enough to use 1 pad for two days. We are not sure, whether to continue taking Novelon, or stop it. Please suggest.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.
The condition that you describe is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding. In this there is heavy bleeding and no cause is found.

If bleeding is occuring with novelo then it will not help further. Take tablet pause for now. The further treatment options depend upon her desire for future pregnancies. If she wants children I suggest that yo consult an infertility specialist and ensure that she conceives as soon as possible as pregnancy results in a cure in many cases.

If however children are not desired then a dilatation and therapeutic curettege may be needed. It also helps to cure many cases. For more resistant cases an endometrial ablation or a hysterectomy are the other options.

So discuss these with your doctor and then decide.

Hope this was helpful.
Feel free to ask any further queries and I will be happy to help.
Thanks for using HCM.
Have a good day.
