What Causes Numbness In The Hand?

My left hand has gradually started getting numb and I don't have very much strength in it. It is mostly in my little finger but is starting to become difficult to even clip my nails with clippers. I don't have the strength to sqeeze the clippers. What is going on with me. I am right handed and it is fine.

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

There are a huge number of causes that could be causing this problem. I will just name a few most common ones. And tell you how to investigate for them-

a. cervical problem: the neck pain can be problematic. the compression of a nerve may cause the problem- suggest an x ray cervical spine

b. could be a brachial plexopathy- this is a group of nerves that supply the arm. trauma and infection can affect them- suggest an NCV of the arm.

c. the nerve entrapment somewhere along the arm- say wrist or elbow- can cause similar problems. Again suggesting an NCV.

From the query, I dont have the details on the prior issues or preceding issues. So I would suggest you supply us that information. Some help can be extended based on the information

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further. Best of luck.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
