What Causes Thin And Brittle Nails?

I am 54 and haven t had a period in about 7 or 8 months. Strange symptoms... Have been losing adhesion in my nail beds. My nails are become thin and brittle too. Starts at the outside edges and works its way inward and progresses up to the top of my nail bed (closer to the knuckle) I ve also noticed my skin is dryer and I get tiny dry patches on my upper arms and shoulder... Not a lot and they come and go. Final symptom is that I ve had painful nodules surface along my neck. They re no bigger than half the diameter of a dime, but they hurt. They go away in like 2 to 4 days, but come up in other areas on my neck. Right now I have two. I think this may be thyroid related, but I am not sure. Any ideas as to what it might be? I am height-weight proportionate, but have gained about 15 lbs over the last 3 or so years. I am height-weight proportionate and don t take any medications b/c I have always been very healthy.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern for brittle nails. brittle nails can be due to any long term illness or any emotional or stressful event and due to nutritional deficiency or hormonal influence.

After illness or stress and nutritional dysfunction it is quite common to get brittle nails.

If I were your dermatologist then would have prescribed you tablet containing Acetylcysteine, Calcium Pantothenate, Selenium, Zinc, Biotin, Copper as active ingredients. You can take these vitamins in the form of biotin, calicium pantothenate and other vitamin B complexes.

Take care.
