Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having unexplained tailbone pain for 2 months now. My doctor first thought it was arthritis, due to the fact that I have lost 65 pounds and have much less "padding" now, so I am basically sitting on the bone. Another doctor I spoke with didn't think that made sense. So my original doctor ordered blood work - all normal except elevated white blood cells indicating inflammation. She also ordered x-rays, which were completely normal. I think she may try to get me to give it more time now that those tests are normal but I'm scared and in almost constant pain now - pain that has also started to radiate from my tailbone into my lower back. What should I do? Go to an orthopedist?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Mukesh Chugh's Response
Hi Thanks for writing your query Based on your description this injury is called coccygodynia. My advice for you would be- 1. Sitz’s bath- sit in the tub filled with lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes two times daily. 2. Avoid sitting on hard surface and try to sit on one buttock. Avoid jerky rides and take rest. 3. Medication wise you may take Ibuprofen for few days. It usually takes 2-3 week time to heal. If the problem persists see your local doctor. Take care and wish you good health.
