I am scheduled in a few days to have a hysterectomy and i am hearing so many negative things about the surgery and really getting scared. I am 48 and thinking about my sex life after the surgery. My doctor told me she is removing everything and i am wondering if it is all necessary. Pleeeeease advice
It is important to discuss with your doctor exactly what she plans on removing and what the reasons are for removing it. Sometimes it is necessary, and sometimes the ovaries and/or the cervix can be left inside. Every single case is different, and there are many factors that influence what the right decision is for you. This includes things such as the reason for the hysterectomy,. your family history and risk factors for cancer, your own medical history, and much more. Your concern about your sex life is very understandable. However, you should know that most women that have a hysterectomy have a healthy and normal sex life after the surgery. In fact, studies show that more women report an improvement in their sex life then women who report that it has gotten worse. There are many reasons for this, especially when you consider that many women get a hysterectomy due to problems such as pain, bleeding, and others, and of course when that problem resolves, it makes sense that sex gets better. This is a long topic, and really requires a lengthy and extensive conversation with your doctor, as every case is different. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any more questions.
