How Effective Is Synthroid For Hyperthyroidism ?

It s a big question. Can an internist help with everything that is ailing me? I had Hyperthyroidism, received radio active iodine therapy 4 years ago and I feel weird when I take the synthroid. I haven t taken any for over 7 months and now feel that I m losing focus and concentration. I ve been depressed lately and forgetting things. My stomach gets bloated all the time and my breath stinks really bad. What kind of doctor should I see? I m in Chandler, AZ

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Chandler,

Your symptoms indicate thyroid problems. I suggest to consult an endocrinologist as soon as possible and to run further tests to evaluate your health condition:
- echo and scintigraphy of the thyroid gland
- thyroid hormones levels in blood (TSH, T3, T4)
- abdominal ultrasound
- EKG
- cardiac echo

Based on the test results, your endocrinologist will decide if you can take synthroid or not.

All the best!
