What Is The Cause Of Breathlessness During Menstrual Cycles?

Dear doctor, When i get my menstrual period on day two and three of the cycle I become breathless and find it difficult to breath and certain times of the day. It comes on suddenly and then abates. It also comes on when I slightly exert myself i.e walking up stairs and small hill. Accompanying this is aching legs from the knee down. Both these symptoms stop on day four of the cycle.

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

Assuming that you are extremely healthy and young, and assuming that this is entirely limited to your cycle and NEVER occurs outside of your cycle, then I would assume that this is a hormonal effect. It is not a typical complaint that OB/GYN's hear, but the only good explanation is something related to the change in hormones that occurs during the cycle and menstrual flow. One way to evaluate this (under the care of an OB/GYN) is to consider birth control pills taken in a continuous fashion, thus avoiding your period.

I hope that this helps and good luck!
