Squamous metaplasia

What is Squamous metaplasia?

Squamous metaplasia is the change from one type of epithelium, usually glandular epithelium to a squamous epithelium. Every organ has its own type of lining. Squamous type is tougher and found in organs that are exposed to more wear and tear like skin, oral cavity, vagina. If an organ with another epithelium is exposed to excess wear and tear it may change its epithelium to squamous.
