Could The Symptoms Like Tiredness, Irritation, Mood Swings And Constipation Are Side Effects Of Norco's And Muscle Relaxers Which Were Advised After The Cervical Spinal Surgery?

Hello, my question is about my significant other who had cervical spinal surgery about a month ago. He had C5-C7 drilled out and replaced with donor vertebrae. He has done extremely well recovering physically but still complains about pain, which is expected with his recovery. He has been prescribed to Norco's and muscle relaxers. He was concerned about these because of his past alcohol addiction. Here are his symptoms from these meds he has complained about and Ive noticed: No sexual desire, very tired, irritable and mood changes, constipation. He has called me up crying one night (which hes not like that) not knowing what to do and terrified about being addicted to these meds. Recently he tried not taking them and said it was similar to his experience in rehab with alcohol. He and I love eachother, but he had an extreme mood shift the past few days and all of a sudden has no feelings about being with me. Theres nothing I can do if that's how he really feels, I am very confused and need to know if these medications taking them, becoming addicted or stopping them can affect ones mood or feelings so dramatically?

Hi there.

The answer to your question is Yes.
These medicines do cause all the side effects mentioned including addiction.

The mood swings could also be a personality disorder ( as you have mentioned his past alcohol history).
It could also be due to irritation and frustration due to chronic pain.

I would suggest you to go to your operating surgeon and consider gradual withdrawal of these drugs.
Short course stetoids under strict supervision or any good NSAID like Diclofenac will help till then.

Kindly also consider consulting a psycjiayrist.

I hope my advice has helped n
