What Are Dentures?

My grand mother is now 68 years. her teeth has fallen. She now has difficulty in eating anything. She usually swallows the food and she has difficulty in taking foods like chappathis. We went to a dentist and the doctor advised her for getting dentures. What are theses dentures?

Hi
Dentures are a set of artificial teeth (upper and lower), which are removable ie: can and should be removed at night or during cleaning. They resemble gums and teeth and are made of acrylic material. Denture fabrication will take around 5-6 visits to the dentist. Wearing dentures will not only help your grand mother to chew properly but also improve her appearance which will make her feel good.

Hi,
Denture is an artificial replacement of the missing teeth. Your granny can get an upper and a lower denture done by a dentist. This will help her in chewing foods and in her speech and her TMJ function.

Dentures are a kind of device that adentist constructs to replace the missing teeth, and support surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

Dentist Dr. Roshan Khan's  Response
hello ann,
the only option that your granny has to go for is the dentures. its basically the artificial replacement of teeth. the main reason for the tooth replacement in your granny`s case would be for function ie. to eat & chew. with out teeth there may be more problems with indigestion, acidity, malnourishment etc.
the success of a complete denture depends on 2 things, the adaptivity of the patient to the dentures and the skill of the clinician.
the fit (retention) of the denture depends upon the status of the ridge ie the gums. if the gums are fuller and big the denture will be more retentive and vice-versa.
every denture wearer comes across few difficulties initially like.
1. difficulty in speech,swallowing.
2. increased salivation.
3.intial ulcers.
4.difficulty in placement and removal of the dentures.
the patient usually takes a month to get used to the new dentures. in most of the cases the tongue and cheek muscles helps to hold the denture in its place ( especially the lower denture)
the problem with less ridge or loose denture can be managed by using dental implants for support. ( implant retained over dentures)
more over if few teeth like the premolars can be saved and can be used to support the dentures ( tooth supported over denture)
hope this helps

Hello,
Dentures are basically the artificial replacement of teeth. These are the only options left in case of a completely edentulous (teeth-less) patient like granny. So go to a good dentist and get them done so that granny can again start enjoying her food...
take care...

there is no option other than dentures for the granny. see that you get good quality and properly fitting dentures or else you will land up in making ulcer in the mouth
