I have had severe stomach pain for 72 hrs, began with a bout of diarrhea & stomach pain seemed like all over my stomach area both upper & lower. Almost like being in labour! Today pain has settled on left side just below rib cage with pain right thru to groin. Diarrhea has ended & only one bowel movement yesterday - area hurts when I apply pressure

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in.

The possibilities I can think of in your case is acute gastroenteritis which normally lasts for 48-72 hours. Other possibilities are appendicitis, renal calculi, gastric ulcer etc.

However, Since the symptoms seems to be improving, I would go more in favour of gastroenteritis.

I would advise you to have plenty of fluids to rehydrate yourself, like ORS, rice porridge etc. Probiotics like lactobacilli might also help. Continue to have a bland diet for the next 1-2 days.

In case of worsening symptoms, abdominal pain and distension, fever, vomiting etc, please visit your physician at the earliest.

I hope I have answered your question. Please do get back to me if you have further queries.

Have a great day :)

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
