What Causes Swelling And Numbness In Hands And Feet During Pregnancy?

I am 35 weeks pregnant aged 44 years with my second child. My feet are quite swollen now and often my hands feel numb and tingle. I tested my urine at work today which showed Keytones ++ and nothing else.My appetite is excellent and eat a variety of foods but have cravings for sweet foods and carbohydrates.

Hi,

You are at 35 weeks pregnancy and have swelling over hands and feet, love sweets and urine is showing positive ketones.

Presence of 2+ ketones means that there are increased ketones in the body. This happens when body is not able to use sugar as in diabetes which is very common during pregnancy. The swelling may be due to many causes ranging from anemia hypo proteinemia, increased blood pressure, or simply due to pregnancy. The tingling may be due to the above causes or vitamin B12 deficiency which is also common during pregnancy.

I suggest that you visit your treating physician and get your blood sugar levels or better still a GTT, complete hemogram and serum proteins done. Also check your blood pressure to see if it is normal. Drink plenty of water to flush the ketones away and do not eat anything sweet till you get your reports.

Further treatment will depend upon the cause of the symptoms.

Hope I was able to help you. Have a happy and safe delivery.

Thanks for using Health Care Magic.
I would be happy to answer any further queries.
