Lump Above The Belly Button. Hernia?

Hi - my husband all of a sudden has a small lump/bump just above his belly button. When he pushes it he says it gurgles? It hasn't grown and doesn't hurt. Wonder if it could be a hernia or related to acid reflux? He also has a pocket in his throat that food gets caught in. I am seriously worried and he just won't stop working.

Dear Madam,
You are describing what appears to be umbilical hernia. This happens in close proximity or within the belly button, and is a weak spot on the midline anterior abdominal wall. It starts as a small lump and may get bigger over time. In the beginning it can be reduced into the belly, but over time this may not be possible. The reason it gurgles is that it may have bowel contents within it.

He also a has a diverticulum in his esophagus. Although rare these may happen concomitantly if he has fascial tissue weakness.

I would advice him to see a general surgeon. The operation for umbilical hernia is quite simple and can be done on an outpatient basis. Surgery is the only way to treat this condition. The esophageal condition should also be treated surgically if it is causing a great discomfort.

Take care and I hope he gets well soon.
