Is It Safe To Give Tylenol With Codeine To Kids For Bad Cough?

Hi my kid (2 yrs old, 39inches and about 37lbs) has a bad cough and the doctor prescribed him Tylenol with Codeine in it. I am to give it to him at bedtime only 2ml. I don't like giving my child drugs that are strong like this but last night was bad and he kept coughing worse after a few hours. Can he have it after 6hr again or should i just try and give him Motrin to settle his pain.

Hi,

Your child was prescribed codeine to suppress the cough and Tylenol to reduce both pain and fever. Motrin will only be able to control pain and fever like Tylenol but will have no benefit in cough. Moreover, it is not safer than Tylenol. SO in my opinion, you should abide by your doctor's instructions and give both codeine and Tylenol as frequently as prescribed.

Best wishes.
