Whitish Flaky Toe Nail. Infection?

I have what appears to be a whitish flaky toenail. This is only toenail with any problems. When I cut the nail I realized that there was a space under the nail. I cut the nail over the space to reveal a small hole (ulcer) that was slightly infected. I cleaned the area thoroughly, squeezed out all the gross stuff and dressed it. Two days later the wound looks very good and is now healing well, but I have no idea how I got this or what it is? Should I still go to the doctor even though it looks like it is healing well now?

Hello and welcome to HCM,

The two lesions- white flaky toe nail and the ulcer on the nail bed can be due to same disease process or two different disease processes.
It can be due to a fungal infection since a white flaky nail is characteristically seen in fungal infection.
Secondly, the ulcer on the nail bed can also be due to fungal infection or a separate infectious process.
Although the wound has healed, a clinical examination of the toe nail is needed.
Fungal infection if present has to be confirmed by nail scrapings.
Fungal infections of the nail requires a long treatment with topical anti-fungals.

Thanks and take care
