Greenish Discharge From The Ear. Is It Ear Wax Or Infection?

My son gets ear wax build up quiet easily, yesterday I took him to get his ears cleaned out with a candle which we have done before. However, this time, as of today/night, he has had discharge the color of blueish, greenish and brown. And when I say blueish/green/ that s truly the color. When I look into his ear with a otoscope , it looks like green ear wax. What do you make of this? Sounds like an ear infection , but I was told it is not. ?????

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Do not tamper with your ears. The ear wax gets accumulated and comes out of the ear as a normal cyclical phenomenon. Tampering ear canal could lead to injury to tissues resulting in disruption of normal cycle and results in impacted wax formation.

Any discharge after trying to clean ear of its wax suggests conditions such as furunculosis of outer ear or otitis externa. It will have to be treated with antibiotics and ear drops or wicks. Please visit your ENT specialist so that he could have a proper treatment if required.
