Hard Lump Under Rib Cage, Slight Soreness, Feels Like A Rib. Causes?

I have a hard bone like lump under left rib cage, I noticed it first when I was little, now just wondering what it could be. It never bothers me. Today I ve been pushing on it a lot and trying to feel more for what it is, so it s a little sore. I always thought it was a rib but its much shorter than my other ribs and sticks out more. What could it be?

Thanks for writing to us.

The condition you are referring to probably falls under a Cartillagenous -bony overgrowth usually occuring near a joint and we doctors call it an "Exostosis".This is technically referred to as a benign tumour called"Osteochondroma".This usually develops during childhood to adolescence on the bony growth plate.as it is a benign growth no treatment is usually required.

(B)Costochondritis;-Usually a sterile inflammation that responds to NSAIDs and occurs in the junction of rib with a cartillage.Tietz Syndrome.

When there is a rapid growth/painful/obstructing a blood vessel/compressing a nerve/causing tingling and numbness--Neurovascular symptoms develop the orthopedic intervention is required in the form of Surgery termed as "Excision"(Biopsy-HPE)

Kindly consult an Orthopedic Surgeon who will investigate the same with X-Ray/CT-Scan/MRI as per the merit of the case and advise you

further Management based upon the results. Sometimes Bone Biopsy results may be required if Chondrosarcoma is suspected.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
