Impetigo Above Eyes And Mouth. Can Cipro Be Given For This Infections?

hello Doctor,
my son is away with my husband for a month in an area where medical help is not all that great. My son is developing impetigo above his eyes and around mouth area. I packed his Bactroban ointment, which my husband applied for his condition started about 2 days ago. My husband has cipro 750 mg which he was taking for his ear infection and Prednisone 5mg. Can my husband give my son Cipro for his infection?

Hi,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

Ciprofloxacin is one of the antibiotics which should not be given to children as it can cause problem in bones. We do not prefer this antibiotic before the age of 1 years preferably. SO if your son is below this age then you should not give this antibiotic to him and if he is above this age then can give the same. If your son is below 15 years then antibiotics such as "azithromycin" or cefopodoxime" or "cefixime" can be given safely.

Other than that you should maintain good hygiene and nutrition of of your son. Let him stay way from hot and humid climate and no scratching of the area.

Hope to have provided the helpful informations regarding your problem.

With good health wishes"

HI

Welcome to HCM

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection caused by gram positive bacteria. Systemic antibiotics like Cloxacillin, flucloxacillin, cephradine (500mg 6 hourly for 7 days) are selective for Gram positive bacteria and indicated for impetigo. Ciprofloxacin (cipro) is a broad spectrum antibiotic mainly works on gram negative bacteria and disease like typhoid fever, Urinary tract infection, enteritis...

You would provide cephradine or flucloxacillin in stead of cipro for your son. it would be better if you consult with a dermatologist/ pediatrician for this.

With regards.
