Taking Coumadin. What Could Be The Reason For Having Continuous Nose Bleeds?

Hello, My father is taking Coumadin. Recently he started having heavy nose bleeds. He had to be taken to the ER three times within a 36 hour period. He was given something similar to a close-pin and was told to keep it on for x amount of time. When he removed it he again started bleeding heavily. He sat upright in a recliner with his head down while pinching his nose. The bleeding stopped but when he got up, it started to bleed again. He had to return to the hospital 8 hours later and they packed his nose and told him to come back in the morning to have it removed. He awoke in the middle of the night and the packing was saturated with blood. When sitting in a recliner it will temporarily stop. My siblings who were with him told him to stop taking the Coumadin - which he did. However, the bleeding started again several hours later and he again had to be taken to the ER. They again packed his nose and was sent home. He slept in the recliner but woke at 5 AM this morning with another bleed. My parent s live 2 1/2 hours away so I feel helpless. I do not know what his dosage of Coumadin is and I don t know if they told the ER Doctor that they told him to goo off of it. He was told to call his GP in the morning. Can going cold turkey off of this med be serious? Also, your thoughts on the continued nose bleeds. Thank you for your help.......Linda

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding recurrent nose bleeding of your father, who is also taking Coumadin.

After thinking over all about your complaints and observation of your doctors and the treatment so far he had been given it is my opinion that it may be the side effect of Caumadin. This may be very easily investigated by doing some blood tests-

1- Blood- CBC , BT, CT, Prothrombin time.

If above investigation favors side effect of Caumadin than that should be stopped for a week , otherwise we should look for other causes of nse bleed as- Hypertension, and any local problem in nose which may be short out by thorough examination by ENT doctor.

Regards.
