Is There Any Long Term Side Effect For Frequent Cold Related Antibiotic Usage?

Sir, I am getting chest congestion, cold, running nose, fever (sometimes) very frequently (within 1 or 2 months). Each time I used to take antibiotic (azithromycin) as directed by my physician (say for 3 days). Please tell me whether it will cause serious side effects in my future? Please provide suggestions.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these repeated and frequent cold related symptoms. I will suggest that your doctors should look into why you are having repeated symptoms and infection so as to prevent repeated episodes. This would be very helpful. I have a high suspicion of you being prone to allergies and this may explain why you keep having these symptoms. Controlling them would be able to spare you repeated antibiotics use. Also, not all of these episodes need antibiotics for treatment. Your doctor may want to make sure you have a bacteria infection before prescribing them. most of these infections are often controlled with symptoms relievers like Tylenol, Benadryl, etc. Also using antibiotics can lead to resistance making it more difficult to treat you for infections in future because of limited antibiotic options.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you for using our services and feel free to ask for more information if need be.
