What Is Sinusitis?

What is sinusitis? You get up in the morning feeling lousy, with a heavy head a feeling which Persists through the day wanting to sleep all the time, you're coughing and sneezing and tired and achy. You think that you might be getting a cold. Later, when the medicines you've been taking to relieve the symptoms of the common cold are not working, you finally drag yourself to the doctor. After listening to your history of symptoms, examining your face and forehead, and perhaps doing a sinus X-ray, the doctor says you have sinusitis. What are sinuses? Sinuses are hollow air spaces in the human body. When people say,"I'm having a sinus attack," they usually are referring to symptoms in one or more of four pairs of cavities, or sinuses, known as paranasal sinuses. These cavities, located within the skull or bones of the head surrounding the nose, include the: Frontal sinuses over the eyes in the brow area Maxillary sinuses inside each cheekbone Ethmoid sinuses just behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes Sphenoid sinuses behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes Each sinus has an opening into the nose for the free exchange of air and mucus, and each is joined with the nasal passages by a continuous mucous membrane lining. Therefore, anything that causes a swelling in the nose-an infection, an allergic reaction, or an immune reaction-also can affect the sinuses. Air trapped within a blocked sinus, along with pus or other secretions, may cause pressure on the sinus wall. The result is the sometimes intense pain of a sinus attack. Similarly, when air is prevented from entering a paranasal sinus by a swollen membrane at the opening, a vacuum can be created that also causes pain. What are the symptoms of sinusitis? The location of your sinus pain depends on which sinus is affected. Headache when you wake up in the morning is typical of a sinus problem. Pain when your forehead over the frontal sinuses is touched may indicate that your frontal sinuses are inflammed

Well I did get a ctscan at age 41, I am 44 now it showed ethmoid sinusitis.  I became concerned reading about how it could lead to a brain infection (yikes!)

So now I don't know if I should seek another opinion?  Like I said I don't get colds where I am in bed for a few days like I used to, I get a scratchy throat maybe about once a year and feel like a cold is coming on but it dissapates in a day.

Now from all the reading I've done in general I thought it was better to expose the immune system to invaders occasionaly to keep it strong but does that notion apply here? I don't use antibiotic soaps I don't want to live in a plastic bubble lol. I live SW of chicago (rural) so I get exposed to all the season changes hoping that helps build up my immune system too lol.

P.S. I dont' really get attacks, it is constant, just varies in degree and I have become used to it. I have saline nose spray for when it gets real thick.

Thanks for any thoughts and for your response.

What are the risks and complications of sinus surgery? The following complications of sinus surgery have been reported in the medical literature. This list is not meant to be inclusive of every possible complication. It is here for your information only - not to frighten you - but to make you aware and more knowledgeable concerning potential aspects of sinus surgery. * Failure to resolve the sinus infections or recurrence of sinus problems and/or polyps. * Bleeding. In very rare situations, a need for blood products or a blood transfusion. You have the right, should you choose, to have autologous (using your own stored blood) or designated donor blood prepared in advance in case an emergency transfusion is necessary. You are encouraged to consult with your doctor regarding these issues if you are interested. * Chronic nasal drainage or excessive dryness or crusting of the nose. * Need for further and more aggressive surgery. * Need for allergy evaluation, treatments, or environme

I also have same problem. Iam suffering from sinusitis form 5 years. My nose gets blocked and i get severe headache. I saw an ENT surgeon 2 years back, he said that my nose septum is deviated and needs to be corrected an he advised surgery. As per his advice i underwent operation, it was fine for one year, again the problem i started.

I was diagnosed with chronic sinusitis about 3-4 years ago and my doctor wouldn't do surgery because I smoke.  I am glad he didn't, the sinuses affected are the ones in the very back for me so my drainage is to my stomach not a runny nose and I don't get colds anymore.  I wonder if a doctor monitors these discussions because I'd like to know: Am I building a stronger immunity sytem because of the constant mucus pool in the back of the sinuses or am I lucky?

Don't be afraid of sinusitis , all  details have nicely been placed, only one thing when I get an attack of Sinusitis I give hot  air to the affected areas and the pain get rid off and secondly if a person is developing Sinusitis at an elder age , the Sinuses mist be drained for relief and for histo pathological examination.
