to pump the blood throughout your body. Blood carries oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from cells. Each cell in your body needs oxygen (that's their food source) to survive and their waste product, carbon dioxide, needs to be excreted by you breathing out. That is why people w/ a heart attack need to be treated fast, b/c if you don't give oxygen to lets say an organ as important as the brain, you will expire.
