Penicillin In Strep Treatment

My mother got penicillin from her dental surgery a week ago. She's stopped taking it, and is fine now, but now I have strep. She told me that strep is treated with penicillin and told me to take one of the pills every 12 hours until the packet is all used up. I'm wondering if that will take care of my strep.
